Are You Enjoying the Dessert in Life?

Guest Blog Written by Joy Paul, LCSW-C, President of the Board of Directors at Mental Health Association of Montgomery County.

Did you know STRESSED spelled backwards is DESSERT?  I think there is meaning we can take from that.  I believe that in the midst of stressful times, it is only human to need some sweetness in your life.  Whether you are dealing with illness, difficulties on the job, family issues or financial issues we all need a sweetness break.  Life doesn’t always afford us the opportunity to go on a “real” vacation whereby you go to a favorite place and relax.  So we have to learn how to enjoy moments within the day that bring smiles to our faces, a hearty laugh to our souls and moments in our lives where our minds turn to pleasant thoughts.  That’s the “dessert” we can find even in the midst of stress, if even for a moment.

My “dessert” moments often come from a conversation with a family member or friend on the phone, in emails, through text messages or otherwise staying connected to my loved ones.  The connection helps me to “stay positive” and “connect with others,” – both tools to promote mental well-being.

“The ability to be in the present moment is a major component of mental wellness.”

–Abraham Maslow

So moment to moment, hour to hour, day to day, month to month, year to year – try to enjoy a connection with something, even something small, that can make you feel more positive and energized.  When you feel stressed, remember that it is okay to take a break and think about something happy.  May 28th is My Mental Health Day; however, in each and every day we must seek moments when we can enjoy the sweetness in life!

This is terrific, Joy. I love what you wrote above. I just happened to come across this website/blog. I hope that yesterday (5/28)was a great ‘mental health day’ for you. I need to do a little better in this area. One step at a time, eh?

    Love,
